What We're Drinking Now - Playing Catch Up!

Rachel and I worked through a number of wines over the past few days, starting with a dinner party on Saturday.  Here's a rundown of what was had:

STRATUS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008
VQA Ontario
Private Order

Beautiful floral and citrus aromatics.  Slightly oaked, this wine pours on the grapefruit, grass, and tropical fruit flavours all with a lovely mineral edge.  Hybrid Bordeaux/NZ style.  I'm 91 points on this wine.

Served with seared scallops on a bed of jonagold apple, pancetta, and cilantro with a blood orange beurre blanc.

VALLETTA GRENACHE/SHIRAZ 2005
VINTAGES 225136  $38.55
McLaren Vale, South Australia

There still might be some of this kicking around your local Vintages section.  I'm glad this wine had some time to simmer down.  Loaded with blackberry and stewed blueberry fruit.  Some unexpected high tones and acid bring this wine together beautifully.  Could age even longer.  Lovely now.  I'm 94 points on this wine.

Served with grilled rack of venison, blueberry demi, red chard, yellow beets.

MCPHERSON CHAPTER THREE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2008
VINTAGES 222091 (Online Exclusives)  $29.95
Central Victoria, Australia
This is the second time we've had this wine, and we're considering buying more.  Beautiful aromas of hung meat, eucalypt, cassia, and blueberries.  Black and blue fruits wrap around finely etched tannins and acids.  It tastes like...another glass.  I'm 92 points on this wine.  Highly Recommended.

Served with...in between dinner and dessert conversation.

BERES TOKAJI LATE HARVEST HARSLEVELU 2008

A rare treat offered up by a generous dinner guest.  Purchased somewhere in Edmonton a few years ago.  This beautiful semi-sweet wine had ripe stone fruit and candied citrus on the nose and palate.  Exquisite minerality.  Delightful contrast to the uber sweet tokajis we all know and love.  I'm 90 on this wine.

Served with lemon tarte - raspberry coulis.
