Wine Reviews - Lots of 'Em

While we would like to take credit for tasting all of these wines and writing them up in one night, sadly, we can't.  Nevertheless, here goes:

MCPHERSON BASILISK SHIRAZ/MOURVÈDRE 2010
VINTAGES 289926 $18.95
Victoria, Australia

Aromas and flavours of black cherry, white pepper, black currants, and spice.  Medium finish, a great steak wine.  Great value. I'm 90 on this wine.  -Andy

BOUTARI GRANDE RESERVE 2007
VINTAGES 140111 $16.95
Naoussa, Greece
A great wine for all fare, this wine is somewhat reserved, with dried fruit on the nose.  The palate is rather compartmentalized, with dried cherry, date, scrubrush, five spice, and red raspberries all coming through on their own.  Acids and alcohol all in balance.  I'm 88 points on this.
-Andy

CAMPO ELISEO 2005
VINTAGES 280537  $62
Toro, Spain

This is one hell of a wine, bursting with blackberry, stewed blueberries, and chocolate.  A little time in the glass reveal sweet earth, hung meat, cassia, and sweet tobacco.  A 45 second finish, this wine is at its peak.  I'm 96 on this wine.  -Andy

ROMAIN DUVERNAY VACQUEYRAS 2009
VINTAGES 280966  $23.95
Rhône, France

This wine is all class, with graphite, anise, garrigue, and black raspberry on the nose.  These notes expand on the palate, with very forward cassis and a flicker of rosemary on the finish.  Could age for more than a decade.  91 points.  -Andy

ALLEGRO CON SPIRITO ENEBRAL 2009
VINTAGES 305565 $15.95
Toro, Spain

This wine from the brooding Toro region exhibits wood, graphite, black double salt licorice and currants on the nose.  On the palate - slightly unripe blackberries and huckleberries.  Finish is smooth and inviting.  A great mid-week wine.  89 Points. -Andy

THE HOGUE CELLARS GENESIS RIESLING 2010
VINTAGES 309666  $18.95
Columbia Valley, Washington State

Piercing aromas and flavours of candied lemon, lime, white peach and red grapefruit lead to a beautiful fresh, mineral-tinged finish.  Slightly off-dry.   Perfect example of Washington Riesling, bridging the gap between Australia and Germany.  I'm 90 on this wine. -Andy

SAN FELICE IL GRIGIO CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 2007  VINTAGES 716266  $26.95
Tuscany, Italy

Cherries, herbs, and tomato leaf on the nose followed by dried fruit and stewed plum on the palate.  It's surprisingly on its descent.  Held onto this wine with great expectations...could be some bottle variation however.  I'm 88 on this wine (until I secure another bottle for tasting).    -Andy

GUIGAL GIGONDAS 2007
VINTAGES | 331900  $29.95
Rhône, France

Classic Gigondas aromas of herbs, lavender, and violets wrapped around stoney briar fruit.  Palate gets darker with black fruits, iron, black tea, anise, and a hint of graphite often present in the best Châteauneufs.  Seamless and pure.  Could age 5-10 more years with ease.  I'm 92+ points on this wine. -Rachel

MAYSARA JAMSHEED PINOT NOIR 2008
VINTAGES 127035  $29.95
McMinnville, Oregon
Classic ripe pinot aromas of black cherry and black briars drive through the palate with a touch of herb and candied flowers on the finish all supported by fresh acids and a seemingly weightless frame.  Shows the power and delineation of the vintages.  I'm 92 on this wine.  -Andy

CASALVENTO JANUS 2007
VINTAGES 237594  $49
Tuscany, Italy

Powerful aromas of blackberries, black cherry, sweet earch and toasted oak.  The black briars continue on the palate, moving more to black raspberry, dried currants and tobacco.  The fresh acids balance the power of the fruit.  Drink now through 2027.  I'm 95 on this wine.  Classic score.  -Andy

ALAIN JAUME GRANDE GARRIGUE VACQUEYRAS 2009  VINTAGES 233916  $23.95
Rhône, France

Stewed black cherry, black raspberry, fig  and garrigue notes supported by a core of purple plum and graphite.  Taking on a touch of mesquite and hoisin with age.  Drink now through 2014.  I'm 91+ on this wine. -Andy

JUSTINO'S 10 YEAR OLD VERDELHO MADEIRA
VINTAGES 248526  $22 (375 ml)
Madeira, Portugal

Lemon tea, almonds, candied walnut, and dried stone fruit dominate this medium-dry Madeira.  Perfect with medium-soft cheeses.  I'm 88 on this wine.  -Andy

QUINTA DO NOVAL SINGLE VINEYARD LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT 2005
VINTAGES 677815  $24.95
Portugal

Still very much restrained, ripe blackberries, black plum, dark chocolate and mocha lead to a surprisingly fresh finish.  A surprising amount of acid here makes you crave another glass.  Decant 1 hour before serving.  Drink 2014-2040.  91 points.  -Andy

MICHELE SATTA BOLGHERI ROSSO 2009
VINTAGES 39834  $19.95
Bolgheri, Italy

If tasted blind, I would have difficulty fitting this wine into a Bolgheri slot.  More central Tuscany or even Spain.  This wine has lots going for it, with aromas of hung meat, dried blackberry, and herbs on the nose.  The palate explodes with ripe black briar fruit, kirsch and light roast coffee.  Tannins are present, but not the fine-grained ones found in higher-end Bolgheri.  Excellent value.  I'm 90 points on this wine.  -Andy

CONDE DE VALDEMAR RESERVA 2004
VINTAGES 947309  $19.95
Rioja, Spain

Aromas of cherries, currants, fresh tobacco and spice - amplifying on the palate, with a hint of cedar wood and red plum and briar fruit.  A touch of black licorice on the finish.  9 years after the berries were picked, this wine is finally ready to drink.  I'm 91 on this wine.  -Andy

I GIUSTI & ZANZA BELCORE 2009
VINTAGES 652990  $19

Beautiful flavours of blackberries, black currants, tar, and a touch of coffee complement the whiff of flowers on the nose.  This is a wonderful mouthful of wine.  Beautiful clarity and precision.  Unreal wine for under 20 bucks.  93 Points.  Highly Recommended.  -Andy
