Gather your ladies and head to Gezellig

Friday, April 12, 2013

As my ladies and I were celebrating the 30-something birthday of our friend this past Friday, we found ourselves talking about how there is nowhere in Ottawa that offers what Gezellig does: a chic surrounding, great food, extensive wine list, and a lack of snobbyness that all can enjoy.

Ottawa has tons of pubs, it's fair share of upscale gastronomic restaurants, and a variety of world cuisine. But unlike the big American cities like New York, Chicago and most likely L.A. (I've never been...) there aren't a lot of places where 30-something*** ladies can hang out for an evening, hear themselves over the music and enjoy each other's company.

Enter Gezellig.

The name borrows directly from a difficult to translate Dutch word meaning "cozy" or "comfortable". I say difficult to translate, but this latest Beckta restaurant seems to understand quite clearly what the Dutch wish to convey with this word: low lighting; semi-circle booths, long tables to accommodate your large groups or casual service at the bar; very affordable yet intriguing wine list; and a chic twist on comfort food. Half-way between Play and Beckta, Gezellig offers a short list of small plates (scallops, soups, salads, to-die-for-tartare) and a selection of mains, such as elk meatloaf, seafood curry, fish, steak and a vegetarian dish. A nice option: larger sharing plates meant for 2-3 people.

An exciting addition to the Westboro dining scene!

Rating - Lucky duck if you can get a reservation!

*** Disclaimer - 30-something for me means, late twenties to early forties ;)
Also, I pay homage to Sex and the City with that tag!
