WHITE:

DOMAINE ZIND-HUMBRECHT CALCAIRE GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2009 $29.95
VINTAGES 320481 | 750 mL bottle

Alsace, France

Tasting Note
Remarkably, the totality of the estate's crops from Goldert and Heimbourg inform Zind-Humbrecht's 2009 Gewurztraminer Calcaire. Given how distinctive were the 2007 and 2008 wines from each of these sites, says Olivier Humbrecht, he felt that by comparison it would be better to blend together and in effect declassify their fruit from 2009, and he insists that with the hindsight of harvest 2010 - however small its volume, clearly justifying in his view two separate wines - he is reinforced in the belief that he did the right thing by 2009. Cinnamon, vanilla, coca powder, rose petal, decadent lily, and litchi in the nose announce a correspondingly liquidly floral, confectionary, drippingly rich, and creamy palate, with hints of chalk dust as well as the tactile impingement of spice adding counterpoint in a long, seductively soothing finish that for all of its sweetness manages to avoid seeming saccharine. Presumably it is the Goldert that lends structure and the Heimbourg the enveloping sense of ennobled richness to this ravishing performance. Score - 92. (David Schildknecht, erobertparker.com, May 2011)

Tasting Note
Finely knit, with a vibrancy to the refined acidity that focuses the flavors of ripe peach, pear, guava and kumquat. Silky in texture, with a core of smoky minerality that pushes through on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2022. Special Designation: Smart Buys. Score - 92. (Alison Napjus, winespectator.com, Oct. 31, 2012)

JEAN PERRIER & FILS APREMONT CUVÉE GASTRONOMIE SAVOIE 2011 $16.95

Made in: Savoie, France

Description
This wine ranked #55 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2012.

A structured, complex and intense-tasting white, with flavors of white cherry, quince, mineral, beeswax and hints of tarragon. A smoky essence runs through as well, which carries into to the finish, with notes of dried basil. Jacquère. Best from 2013 through 2021. Score - 91. (Kim Marcus, winespectator.com, Sept. 30, 2012)

RED:

CHAKANA ESTATE SELECTION MALBEC 2011 $19.95
VINTAGES 219261 | 750 mL bottle

Mendoza, Argentina

Tasting Note
The 2011 Chakana Estate Selection Malbec comes from Uco and Lujan de Cuyo and is aged for 12 months in French oak (30% new). Tasted twice, it has a delightful bouquet with crisp red cherry, strawberry and vanilla scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins and crisp acidity. It is harmonious and focused, with caressing vibrant red berry fruit on the bright, classy finish. This is a sophisticated Malbec: feminine and seductive. Drink now-2018. Score - 92. (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Oct. 2012)

ROCCA DI CASTAGNOLI CHIANTI CLASSICO 2010  $18.95
VINTAGES 222810 | 750 mL bottle

Tuscany, Italy

Tasting Note
The 2010 Chianti Classico is superb. Dark red cherries, mint, spices and licorice are some of the many notes that emerge from this beautifully delineated, energetic Chianti Classico. In the style of the year, the tannins are quite firm, yet also serve to give the wine much of its energy. I would not be surprised to see the 2010 age gracefully for many, many years. Best of all, it is a ridiculous value. The estate's Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino, aged in a combination of barriques and tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. Score - 91. (Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com, June 2012)

DOMAINE CHOFFLET-VALDENAIRE GIVRY 2009 $26.95
VINTAGES 330183 | 750 mL bottle

Made in: Burgundy, France

Tasting Note
This is rich and dripping with aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry and spice. There's plenty of flesh to coat the tannins, and a lingering finish. Best from 2012 through 2020. Score - 90. (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, Web Only, 2011)

MONTES PURPLE ANGEL 2010 $56.95
VINTAGES 62364 | 750 mL bottle

Colchagua Valley, Chile

Tasting Note
A dark, ambitious red, with ample toast and mocha to the macerated plum skin, dark cherry and grilled fig fruit that pumps out layers of humus, iron and olive paste before the fruit returns for an encore on the finish. Carmenère and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020. Score - 93. (Nathan Wesley, winespectator.com, Dec. 15, 2012)

EVANS & TATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2008  $18.95
VINTAGES 327411 | 750 mL bottle

Western Australia, Australia

Tasting Note
Deep garnet colored, the 2008 Metricup Road Cabernet Sauvignon gives pronounced aromas of black cherry preserves, creme de cassis, mocha and black olives with a hint of roasted nuts. Rich, ripe and full in the mouth, it has a good backbone of crisp acid and medium-firm grainy tannins, finishing long with some savory coffee and game notes. Drink it now to 2016+. Score - 90. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, erobertparker.com, Aug. 2011)

PIRRAMIMMA SHIRAZ 2010   $26.95
VINTAGES 987784 | 750 mL bottle

South Australia, Australia

Tasting Note
Juicy and vibrant with black and purple liqueur aromas and flavours. Full-bodied and ultra-smooth. Deeply concentrated and rich with layered complexity through the palate. This wine cries out for hearty meat dishes, and for you to top up your glass. Food matches: grilled back ribs with a rich sauce, marinated steaks, dark chocolate, lamb, salmon. Drink: 2012-2016. Score - 91. (Natalie MacLean, nataliemaclean.com, Dec. 18, 2012)

GRAHAM BECK SHIRAZ 2009   $17.95
VINTAGES 607796 | 750 mL bottle

Coastal Region, South Africa

Tasting Note
This wine was aged in French and American oak for about a year and a half. It displays alluring aromas of dark fleshy plums, smoke, espresso and even some attractive tarry notes for extra depth. Incredible concentration and power with a long finish. Great with hearty meat dishes. Drink: 2010-2016. Score - 93. (Natalie MacLean, nataliemaclean.com, Feb. 16, 2013)

LE GRAVILLAS PLAN DE DIEU CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES 2010 $14.95
VINTAGES 264648 | 750 mL bottle

Rhône, France

Tasting Note
Characterful tobacco, coffee and forest bouquet, meaty and quite smoky. Gamey, muscular palate of attractive blackberries, blueberries and dark cherries with liquorice, dried flowers and herbs. Score - 5 Stars (out of 5). (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2012)

RIVERA IL FALCONE RISERVA 2007  $22.95
VINTAGES 177295 | 750 mL bottle

Puglia, Italy

Tasting Note
Rivera's 2007 Il Falcone is intense, full-bodied and rich from the very first taste. There is more than enough depth in the fruit to balance the aging in French oak, which is barely perceptible in this vintage. Expressive dark red fruits, flowers and spices flesh out in an especially sexy, voluptuous version of the Falcone. The 2007 is gorgeous today, but it will also drink well for at least another decade, perhaps longer. It is fleshy, radiant and beautiful, but also very nicely structured. Il Falcone is 70% Nero di Troia and 30% Montepulciano. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. Score - 92. (Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com, Feb. 2013)
